Carter meets Hamas leader Mashaal

Former US President Jimmy Carter met the exiled leader of Hamas Friday, brushing off US and Israeli objections to talks with a man accused of masterminding kidnappings and suicide bombings against Israelis.
Carter's convoy arrived Friday afternoon at the Damascus office of Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal under tight security and journalists were kept away from the site. Earlier in the day, Carter met Syrian President Bashar Assad after traveling to Syria from Egypt. (AP)
