The IDF confirmed forces had targeted a cell of Palestinian gunmen spotted near Israeli troops operating in southern Hamas-controlled Gaza on Wednesday afternoon. Palestinian medical officials had earlier reported an Islamic Jihad gunman was killed and four others had been wounded in the strike, three of them in serious condition.

Shortly after the strike Palestinians fired six mortar shells towards Israel, which landed in open areas adjacent to the border fence. No injuries were reported and no damage was caused.

Earlier in the day the IAF launched another strike against Palestinian gunmen in southern Gaza. Ten people were reported wounded.

Palestinian sources say IDF troops have been operating in Gaza since the early morning hours, with tanks accompanying several armored bulldozers. Gunmen opened fire towards the troops.

Witnesses said the army attacked several targets, including an abandoned house where gunmen had gone into hiding.

Meanwhile media reports indicate Egyptian Intelligence Chief, General Omar Suleiman, is expected to arrive in Israel on Monday for talks on Cairo's proposed truce.

Israel has reportedly conditioned the truce on a complete cessation of attacks by Palestinian groups against Israeli targets from Gaza, including the rocket barrages on southern Israel.
