Lights, camera, nature!

Unique high school media class allows students to specialize in filming animals, nature documentaries. Wildlife, just a roll of film away

The Ayanot Youth Village and TV's Teva Hadvarim ("the nature of things") channel have recently launched a new project, aimed at introducing high school students who are majoring in various media professions to producing wildlife films.

The project's goal is to create a new generation of filmmakers dedicated to producing and filming nature documentaries dedicated to the local science and scenery.

The Ayanot Youth Village, where the program takes place, is a 140 acres property, located midway between Rishon Lezion and Yavne, in central Israel.

"Not all students are suitable for high-level algebra and they're looking for other outlets to express their creativity and imagination," Teva Hadvarim CEO Udi Ran told Ynet.

"The unique combination of media, nature and wildlife is wonderfully suited for these talented students, who will take the class as a full-time course, including taking a matriculation exam in it."

The three-year class, he added, will be open for only 25 students. "Our four acres include habitats for a wide variety of birds and reptiles, as well as a special, miniature horse ranch. We plan to create a nature reserve which hopefully will house small animals such as butterflies and insects.

"The students will get to study the animals and document them in their natural environment."

Teva Hadvarim channel, concluded Ran, hopes to add future graduates of the program to its ranks.
