Barak: Peace should be achieved from position of power

Defense minister attends ceremony honoring IDF units, Military Reserves; says Israel, Syria have long way to go before reaching peace, adds both sides know 'they will be required to make painful sacrifices'

Defense Minister Ehud Barak commented Thursday on the renewed talks between Israel and Syria, saying both sides will be required to make sacrifices.

Barak added that "the Syrians know concessions are a two-way street. Taking Syria out of the axis of evil is a primary goal for Israel. One must be realistic – peace can only be achieved from a position of power. Both sides know they will be required to make painful sacrifices… We still have a long way to go."

Barak spoke at a ceremony honoring excellence in the Israeli Defense Forces and the Army Reserve, held at the President's residence in Jerusalem. President Shimon Peres, IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Gabi Ashkenazi and the military's top echelon were all present.

"The Israeli public seems unaware of the great contribution made by the Army Reserves to the country's safety… the (reserve duty) load is not carried equally within Israeli society," said Barak. "Reserve duty is a national, moral duty and those serving train and risk their lives for the sake of state security.

"Israeli society should revere reservists and it is up to all of us to minimize the harm done to their livelihoods and studies. The Reserve Duty Act is the first step taken in that direction."

"You are an example for the defense forces in their entirety. The IDF and I thank you," added army Chief Ashkenazi.

Peres, reiterated the sentiment: "You are a testimony as to the IDF's strength and quality. On behalf of myself and of the Israeli people, we thank you for your excellent service and you contribution to our safety and security. We are all proud of you and know that while you're in reserve in times of peace, you are the key to victory in trying times."
