Woman attacked by Eritrean refugee
Refugee assaults woman walking with two-year-old daughter in Tel Aviv, drags her into apartment, threatens to kill, rape her. Woman fights, escapes, joins police in search leading to man's arrest

A woman in her thirties from Tel Aviv refused to submit to an Eritrean refugee who attacked her and attempted to rape her on Monday. She resisted with all her strength until the man was forced to call on his friends for help, but rather than help him, they opted to help his victim.
Immediately after the assault the woman issued a complaint at the nearest police station and joined in the search for her attacker, who was arrested. The court extended his arrest by four days.
The woman was assaulted while walking in Tel Aviv with her two-year-old daughter in a stroller. Haiela Gabrilanos, a refugee from Eritrea in his twenties, allegedly came up to her and asked her to come with him. When she refused, he threatened to strangle her and her baby.
Due to his large stature, Gabrilanos allegedly managed to draw the woman and the stroller into his apartment nearby. He grabbed her, tore off her undergarments, and threatened to kill her. The woman struggled and yelled with all her might, which kept the man from raping her.
The man called his friends into the room to help him, but as soon as they saw what was happening they came to her defense. Upon leaving the apartment the woman went straight to the police, and after a few minutes of searching Gabrilanos was detained. During the interrogation he confessed to the crime and apologized.
Gabrilanos' defense attorney, Tali Gottlieb, said in court that "the refugee has been in Israel for five months. He asked the woman why she was walking with a baby, and that's it. His arrest can be extended for two days, as would be fair according to the circumstances of the case."
The Magistrate's Court in Tel Aviv determined that Gabrilanos' arrest is to be extended by four days, as there is enough information to tie the suspect to the allegations against him.
