'And thou shall study it day and (white) night'

Fifth year of White Night celebrations in Tel Aviv to feature Jewish music, theater as well as Kabbalah, tours of city

It's been five years since Tel Aviv was first recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), and this year too, the Tel Aviv Municipality will mark the city's White Night status in a series of all-night events.

Aside from clubs, cultural institutions and restaurants affiliated with the city, the city is offering a wide range of Jewish-related events. Just take your pick:

A late-night celebration of Jewish music featuring a variety of musical ensembles and styles will be held at the Brodt House Jewish Cultural Center on 22 Zeitlin Street: At 9:45 pm, the Yood Band, playing first-rate Jewish rock music will perform, followed by internationally-acclaimed violinist Eyal Shiloah who will collaborate with Jewish soul singer Adi Arad.

Just before midnight, Din Din Aviv will be singing songs inspired by biblical texts, such as “Avotai,” addressing the fathers of the nation, and song 150 from the Book of Psalms – which is also featured in her upcoming album coming.

The Great Synagogue of Tel Aviv on 110 Allenby Street will begin its white night events at 10 pm in commemoration of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, which will be attended by the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv-Jaffa Israel Meir Lau.

The events will open with the one-man show "Eved Le’Am Kadosh" (Servant of a Holy Nation) by Tair Theater, followed by a tour of the fneighborhood Neve Tzedek in the trail of Rabbi Kook, titled “Between darkness and light.”

Kabbalah studies will be held by the Mudaut spiritual center following the path of "ba’al hasulam" on 24 Achva Street in Neve Tzedek from 10:30 pm until the Shacharit (Sunrise to Midday) Prayer at 5 am. During the night there will be lectures, a symposium, a Kabbalah women’s class and mikveh immersion, all free of charge.

The Kabbalah Center on 14 Ben Ami Street will begin a “white night tikkun” at 10 pm, and operate as an open house for lectures, workshops, performances and tours.

The Sephardic synagoge Ohel Moed on 5 Shadal Street will conduct an Oneg Shabbat (Saturday night observance) tish at 11 pm, to include songs and stories from the Shabbat table accompanied by traditional tunes.
