Poliker announces survivor support
Israeli singer plans two performances dedicating all proceeds to Holocaust survivors awaiting compensation from government
Or Barnea
Singer Yehuda Poliker has recently offered to hold two performances and donate all proceeds from them to Holocaust survivors in Israel. The survivors have been at odds with the government lately, in a battle to receive the compensation money they deserve.
Poliker came up with the idea while watching a movie made by Guy Maroz and Orly Vilnai, 'Reparations Ethics: The War Continues', a documentary about the prosecuting committee currently holding the survivors' funds. Poliker plans to hold the performances at the Zappa club in Tel Aviv on September 24 and 25.
Yaakov Gilad, Poliker's manager and musical partner, said that "all proceeds from the shows will be dedicated first to the 550 survivors that weren't included in the district court's ruling because of the statute of limitations. The more proceeds there are, the more funds will be donated to the other survivors."
Gilad and Poliker's affinity for the subject of the Holocaust has been evident since 1988, when Poliker released his third album, 'Ashes and Dust'. The album contained lyrics by Gilad, to which Poliker composed music.
The poignant album was entirely dedicated to the Holocaust, and especially the traumas experienced by the duo's parents during World War II. Many view this album as one of the greatest in Israel's history, and it has even won an award entitled as such in a competition held by Yedioth Ahronoth.
