EU, Mideast leaders begin meet on new partnership pact

Leaders from over 40 European and Mediterranean states began a summit on Sunday aimed at launching a French-inspired union to tackle joint challenges such as immigration and launch projects in areas including solar power.

President Nicolas Sarkozy welcomed leaders to the one-day event in Paris, which marked the first time that Syrian and Israeli leaders sat at the same table. (Reuters)
