Palestinians object to Mediterranean Union statement

The Palestinian Authority raised objections to the final communique of a Mediterranean Union summit on Sunday after it was distributed by the French hosts, a Palestinian official said. The official said that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas demanded that a paragraph referring to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict be removed, but a French official said Abbas had given his agreement to the text as issued.

The disputed paragraph said, "Heads of state and government reaffirm their support for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, as referred to in the Lisbon Euro-Med ministerial meeting in November 2007 and according to the Annapolis process." It made no direct reference to a two-state solution. (Reuters)
