Israeli killed in road accident in Peru

Hiker travels in bus involved in head-on collision, which leaves seven people dead, 23 injured

Seven people, including a 23-year-old Israeli hiker Assaf Hakim from the city of Ma'aleh Adumim, were killed Thursday in a head-on collision between two buses in Peru.

 

The Israeli Embassy informed Hakim's parents of their sons' death. His body is expected to be transferred from the Ika region to the capital of Lima and will arrive to Israel on a plane scheduled to land in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening.

 

According to local media, the Israeli hiker was identified by the hospital with the help of a certificate issued in Chile about three months ago.

 

Last weekend, an Israeli woman in her forties was killed in a car accident while travelling near the Punjab province in northeast India.

 

Dina Hoshea had gone to India with husband Yaakov and 18-year-old son Raz to meet up with their eldest daughter, Adi, who has been trekking through East Asia for several months now. The family hired a car and driver upon their arrival to India and that all four where in the car when it overturned.

 

The driver was also killed in the accident. The three remaining family members sustained light injuries and were treated by local medical teams.

 

Michal Elboim, a 24-year-old Jewish Agency emissary, was killed Sunday in a boating accident in Florida. The young woman, who had resided in the United States for about a year, had planned to return to Israel soon.

 

Elboim was responsible for arranging letters from the Jewish community's children to children in the rocket-battered town of Sderot and was involved in raising funds for the south's residents.

 

According to US authorities, Elboim was sitting on the bow of a sailing boat in Perdido Bay. She fell into the water and was hit by the boat's propeller. She was pulled out of the water and underwent resuscitation attempts. Meanwhile, a helicopter was dispatched to the area to take her to a nearby hospital, but she was proclaimed dead shortly afterwards.

 

On Sunday night, Israeli search crews found the body of Avner Bardugo, who fell of his canoe in the Mekong River during a rafting trip in Laos. He was located and identified following information received from a fisherman in the area.
