The festival, which will open on October 10, will screen six of the most prominent films Almagor has taken part in throughout the years, such as “Matzor” by Italian director Gilberto Tofano, which was nominated for a Palm D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, “Avia’s Summer,” “Under the Domim Tree,” “Three Mothers,” “Hands Tied,” and “The House on Chelouche Street” by acclaimed Israeli director Moshe Mizrahi.
“They are honoring me. This is the most important international festival in Poland and the truth is I wanted to bring “Avia’s Summer” and “Under the Domim Tree” to the festival a few times before, and now it’s happening,” Almagor said, adding that “it’s important for me to be in Poland for various reasons.”
The Polish tribute is the second one held in honor of Almagor this year. Two months ago, the Taipei Film Festival also held a mini retrospective of her films.
In July Almagor was invited to join the European Film Academy, founded by acclaimed Swedish director Ingmar Bergman in 1989, as the European answer to the American counterpart also responsible for the Oscars.
Almagor accepted the invitation, saying that “I am a cinema freak and this will enable me to watch the best European product. It also means I will have a say in selecting the best European film and that’s important and heartening.”
