Miki Goldwasser, mother of the late Ehud Goldwasser who was kidnapped by Hizbullah in July 2006, announced on Tuesday that she intends to run for a seat of Nahariya’s local council, as part of the slate of incumbent mayor Jackie Sabag.

Goldwasser told Ynet that she intends to focus on education in Israel. “I don’t intend to deal in politics, that doesn’t interest me. I do want to contribute and deal with issues that are close to my heart,” she said.

She stressed that she wants to “give back to a city that did so much for me in the past two years.” When asked what her specific plans were regarding education, she said she would like to focus on special education and youth at risk.

“I’m only now getting into things. I will learn,” Goldwasser said. She added that Sabag approached her about joining the slate but emphasized that her desire to join his group was “totally mutual”.

Following the return of her son’s body, resulting from an agreement between Israel and Hizbullah, Miki Goldwasser attacked the government’s behavior regarding still-captive soldier Gilad Shalit.

“I don’t think that Hamas is so strong that we can’t do anything. I don’t know what the reason is, but it seems the government is involved in other business like primaries instead of what is supposed to top its list of priorities,” she said.

In a speech a few days ago, Goldwasser called on Palestinian mothers to join in the struggle to free their children in exchange for Shalit. “Just like you don’t want your sons to celebrate Ramadan far away from you, we don’t want Gilad to celebrate the upcoming holidays in captivity.”
