Heart-warming gesture: Needy to enjoy free meals at upscale restaurants
Restaurant owners open their hearts, donate 50,000 meals to needy in project initiated by popular website
Thousands of needy families will be enjoying free meals at various restaurants nationwide, including upscale eateries, after restaurant owners decided to donate meal vouchers ahead of the Jewish New year.
According to humanitarian organizations, over a quarter of a million families living in Israel require donations in order to hold a proper holiday meal.
In light of the disturbing figures, Israeli restaurant website www.rest.co.il appealed to eateries across the country, asking them to donate meals to the needy. However, instead of transferring the food to the families, this year they will be invited to dine at participating chains, on the house.
Roughly 50,000 family-sized meals will be donated to humanitarian organizations, which will in turn transfer the vouchers to the underprivileged.
Every coupon will be good for a five-person meal , and will include an appetizer, a main course, and a soft drink.
"Since the campaign began dozens of restaurant-owners across Israel have opened their hearts," said Liron Dror, the website's CEO. "I am convinced their donations will be used in the best way possible by those who need it."
The hundreds of restaurants that have already confirmed their participation include Cordelia, Messa, Black Steer, and Porter House.
"These are the deeds mankind is judged by," said Amir Shechtman, owner o another participating eatery, L'Entrecote. "If, with such small step, we can help and affect our society, we all profit."
