Woman indicted for drowning son

State Prosecutor's Office charges Regina Kruchkov with murder of four-year-old Michael by holding his head underwater. 'This was a cruel, calculated murder, carried out for no apparent reason,' says indictment

The State Prosecutor's Office filed murder charges Monday against Regina Kruchkov, 31, for the murder of her four-year-old son Michael in early September.

According to the indictment, filed with the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court, Kruchkov filled a basin with water and held the child's head underwater until he drowned.

The prosecution claims to have evidence to support a murder charge, as well as the mother's confession.

The State also intends to offer into evidence the Magen David Adom incident report, stating that the child's death was caused by drowning; as well as the forensics report, complied by the Abu Kabir Institute of Forensic Medicine, corroborating the findings.

"Kruchkov filled a basin with water, waited for her brother to leave the apartment and then proceeded to hold the child's head underwater, until such time as he was no longer resisting.

"This was a cruel, calculated murder, carried out for no apparent reason. The charge attributed to the defendant is one of the harshest noted by the criminal code and fittingly so, considering the fact that the deed was inflicted by a mother on her trusting son," said the indictment.

Kruchkov was arrested in early September, after calling the police emergency line and whispering "I killed my son." Officers dispatched to her Tel Aviv apartment found the boy dead in his bed. She was arrested after confessing the act.

Since her arrest, Kruchkov has undergone several physiological evaluations, aimed to determine whether or nor she is fit to stand trial.

Her father and brother were also arrested, on suspicion that they knew she was about to murder Michael and did nothing to stop her, but both were let go shortly after their arrest for lack of evidence.
