Mofaz: Israel's deterrence eroded
Transportation minister says country's deterrent capabilities have suffered, hinting catalyst was Barak's appointment as defense minister
Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz delivered a thinly veiled jab at Ehud Barak on Sunday, saying Israel's deterrent capabilities vis-à-vis Hamas have eroded since June 2007, when Barak succeeded Amir Peretz as defense minister.
"The current reality in which we thwart terror attacks and in response they dare to launch Grad missiles toward Ashkelon and Qassam rockets at Sderot is intolerable," he said at a conference held at Ashdod's port.
"Israel's agenda must be set by its government, not by the terror organizations."
Mofaz, who served as defense minister from 2002 to 2006, enjoys widespread support among the ports' unions.
Earlier the transportation minister told Ynet that Israel must "stop talking and launch a personal targeted killing policy against the Hamas government" following the renewed rocket attacks on Gaza vicinity communities and the city of Ashkelon.
"We must form a plan and bring it to the cabinet's approval immediately," he told Ynet.
