The body of 23-year-old Omri Kidron, an Israeli backpacker who went missing last June in a river in south-west China, was identified Monday, the Foreign Ministry said.

Foreign Ministry spokesman for domestic media, Yossi Levy, told Ynet the ministry believed that during a trek through one of the province's mountains, Kidron fell into the river and his body was swept away with the current.

Kidron's body was found in the Yunnan Province river 10 days ago and was transferred by an insurance company for examination in Beijing where the body was finally identified.

Kidron was born and raised in Hod Hasharon.

Two years ago he was discharged from the military, and planned to travel until starting his psychology studies in October.

In April Kidron left for Nepal, and continued to China from there.

The Yunnan Province, where Kidron went missing, is a large region, and its area is as big as up to 10 times the size of Israel.
