Albert Einstein is a brand owned by the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the capital's district court stipulated this week, in a temporary injunction issued against the Shegem Furniture Company.
Einstein's image is considered a pop culture icon, and can be found on numerous products, both in Israel
and abroad.
The company used the famed physicist's image in a promotional campaign, but the Hebrew University – which is the heir and owner of all the intellectual property rights pertaining to Einstein's estate, petitioned for an injunction citing unauthorized use.
Shegem manufactures and markets children's furniture. The campaign in question, titled "Inventions Kids Love," featured images of prominent inventors, the likes of the Einstein and Bill Gates.
Once aware of the campaign, the Hebrew University contacted Shemeg, and the latter said it would stop using Einstein's image. However, it did not do so, prompting the university to take legal action.
Shegem Furniture was unavailable for comment.
