The United Arab Emirates, oil-rich Gulf countries, announced Saturday having received $85.8 million in the first days of a campaign to collect aid for the Palestinian victims of the Israeli offensive in
the Gaza Strip.
The President of the Red Crescent emirate, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has called on its citizens and foreign residents to "continue their donations to their brothers in the Palestinian territories" during the campaign.
Friday launched under the theme "Help them", the campaign marked the first day by organizing a telethon, must continue until the first week of February," said Sheikh Hamdan, Deputy Prime Minister of UAE.
The head of state, Sheikh Khalifa Ben Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice-President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammad Ben Rached Al Maktoum, who is also the ruler of Dubai, has offered to finance the construction of 1,200 homes in the band Gaza to Palestinians who lost their homes in the Israeli bombardment, according to an official source.
Solidarity demonstrations were also held Friday in four of the seven members of the federation of United Arab Emirates, including Abu Dhabi, the capital, Sharjah and Dubai.
Featuring Emirates and Palestinian flags and chanting slogans in favor of the Islamist movement Hamas and
the Lebanese Shiite Hizbullah,
the protesters denounced Israel and
the Arab silence.
The demonstrators had obtained the green light by the Emirate Ministry of Interior announced that "allow peaceful marches of solidarity with the Palestinians, a rare initiative in this Gulf country where street demonstrations are strictly prohibited.
