The officials say the new equipment would help stop the smuggling in the area, which has been the main entrance for weapons and explosives used by the Palestinian militant group Hamas
against Israel.
Inside the Rafah terminal on Sunday, four army trucks loaded with wooden crates and drills could be seen accompanied by four US Army engineers.
The Egyptian officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity the subject.
