Shas to Barak: Join emergency government

Yishai calls on Labor chief to join Netanyahu-led government in light of fiscal crisis; Yisrael Beiteinu reps say discussed 'eradication of terror' with Likud negotiators

Shas Chairman Eli Yishai has called on Labor to join an emergency government in light of the deepening financial crisis in Israel.

Following Thursday's coalition talks with Likud representatives, the Shas leader urged Labor chief Ehud Barak to join a government led by Benjamin Netanyahu, "even if only for a year."

Yishai said Likud and Shas hope to draft a preliminary agreement soon, and then finalize it once they have settled the disputed issues.

"We will settle the distribution of ministerial portfolios only after signing the final agreement. We are interested in ministries that deal with the lower socio-economic echelons," he said.

The Likud member in charge of the coalition negotiations also met with representatives of Avigdor Lieberman's party.

Yisrael Beiteinu Knesset Member Stas Misezhnikov said the meeting focused on "eradicating terror and Hamas," adding that "significant progress was made regarding the alteration of Israel's system of government and increased benefits for discharged soldiers."

Netanyahu and Lieberman are expected to meet later in the day.
