Netanyahu, Barak hold private meeting

Defense minister's office says officials discussed security-related issues, but according to estimates meeting also dealt with political matters

Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu met Tuesday morning with Defense Minister Ehud Barak and heads of the defense establishment for a briefing on the main security-related issues Israel is dealing with.

At the end of the meeting, Netanyahu and Barak met in private. The defense minister's office said that the meeting had dealt with security-relates issue, but according to estimates, the two officials also discussed political matters.

The meeting was held as part of a series of meetings between Netanyahu and heads of the defense establishment. The two discussed a series of urgent issues, including the situation in Gaza and the Iranian nuclear threat.

According to rumors spread Monday, the coalition talks between the Likud and the Labor and Kadima parties have been resumed secretly. This report has not been confirmed by any party, but a Labor source said that "there is a feeling, based on the tough reality Netanyahu is facing, that resumed talks are possible."

There are those in the political system who believe that this is the time to resume the talks with Kadima and Labor instead of "being blackmailed by the right-wing parties". Netanyahu, however, is not likely to risk the alliance with his natural partners.
