Initiative: Community for disabled IDF veterans

Matzdeim association sends letter to President Peres, says seeks 'to provide an answer to the accessibility problems of Israel's war invalids'

The Matzdeim association for disabled Israel Defense Forces veterans sent a letter to President Shimon Peres recently, asking him to exert his influence for the allocation of land in full subsidization for the establishment of a communal settlement for Israel's war invalids in the Galilee or Negev regions.

Michael Hershkovitz, the association's chairman and founder, wrote in a letter to the president that "the Matzdeim association for disabled IDF veterans, which was founded in a bid to deal with the unique needs of war invalids, plans to initiate the establishment of a communal settlement in the Galilee, which will be populated by invalids of Israel's wars.

"The community will provide an answer to the accessibility problems of the war invalids and will serve as a house for creative individuals."

Hershkovitz noted in his letter that the association prefers founding such a community in the Galilee, but that the Negev was also an option.

According to Hershkovitz, the goal of this initiative is "to provide an individual and accessible response to Israel's war invalids.

"The community will be a home for disabled artists, will express the artistic needs of Israel's war invalids and will constitute a way in the mental and rehabilitation process of a population which contributed its best years to the State of Israel and its residents."
