IDF arrests Syrian in Golan Heights

Troops capture man that infiltrated border by tunneling beneath it. Syrian did not seem to have violent intentions

Israeli soldiers arrested an unarmed Syrian who crossed into the Golan Heights on Tuesday, a military spokesman said.

The suspect was being questioned and may be returned later to Syria, the spokesman said. He had no further details.

The man had infiltrated a border fence by tunneling beneath it. His motive was unclear but did not appear to be linked to any violent intentions.

The IDF filed a complaint with the UN force stationed on the border.

The fortified Golan frontier is generally sealed and monitored by a United Nations observer force. Some of the thousands of Druze who live there are permitted occasionally to cross to the opposite side with the aid of Red Cross officials.
