Labor 'rebels' slam Barak's 'dictatorial conduct'

Four Labor members to boycott party convention, say Barak uses party to boost own status

Is Labor heading closer to a split? The four so-called Labor party "rebels" – Yuli Tami, Eitan Cabel, Ophir Pines, and Amir Peretz – have decided Saturday to boycott the Labor party conference to be held Sunday.

The four, who earlier Saturday slammed party Chairman Ehud Barak's "dictatorial conduct," made the decision after the Labor leader rejected their recommendation to hold an ideological discussion on the State budget.

A harsh statement issued by the four Labor officials slammed Barak for "continuing to act in a unilateral manner and pushing his ideological rivals out of the party institutions and ranks." The group of rebels also accused the party chairman of providing undue support to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Barak chooses to dedicate his time to internal party politics that are only aimed at boosting his personal status," the statement read. "Barak continues to use the party for his personal needs only. We urge the Labor party leadership to go back to dealing with the essence and not with personal matters."
