Israel may increase flow of goods into Gaza

Cabinet convenes to discuss possible easing of restrictions for Gaza public following US, European pressure. Gov't expected to approve opening of border crossings, increase of humanitarian aid

The National Security Cabinet convened on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the easing of day-to-day life for residents of the Gaza Strip. The ministers have yet to make any formal decision, but several participants said that Israel intends to open the border crossings and allow more humanitarian aid in.

The cabinet meeting was called following increased pressure by both the United States and the European Union on Israel to ease the blockade imposed on the Hamas-controlled Strip.

Since the completion of Operation Cast Lead, Defense Minister Ehud Barak has personally overseen the handling of the crossings.

Gradually the ministry increased the volume of goods authorized to enter the Strip, and correspondingly the number of trucks as well. The increase also meant more types of supplies were allowed in.

Despite these measures however, the civilian population continues to suffer from the closure. Any supplies that could be appropriated by terror groups and used in the manufacturing of weaponry, such as various construction or agricultural goods, have not been allowed to enter and this clause is not expected to change.

"Israel sees Hamas as responsible for any attacks emanating from Gazan territory. The cabinet is

examining other ways to ease the lives of the Palestinian population in Gaza while maintaining Israel's security interests," the cabinet said in a written statement. The cabinet also discussed the efforts to release captive soldier Gilad Shalit.

Minister Barak believes that while some restrictions should be eased, the sanctions on the crossings must remain. He has asked the cabinet not to open the border crossings at all, as the Americans are demanding, even for the rehabilitation of Gaza.
