Jordanian ambassador: 2 states only solution

Speaking at event honoring Jordan's independence, Ali al-Ayed says peace is 'necessity, not luxury'

Jordan's ambassador to Israel, Ali al-Ayed, said Wednesday his country supported the two-state solution as the only solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

During a festive event held at the Jordanian Embassy in honor of the country's 63rd Independence Day the ambassador said peace in the region was "a necessity, not a luxury".

"Jordan supports the two-state solution – a Palestinian state alongside the state of Israel, living in peace along its borders. There is no alternative," he said. "We support the Arab peace initiative, which will open the gate for Israel to 57 Muslim nations."

President Shimon Peres, who also spoke at the event, said, "Jordan is Israel's ally and I hope the Jordanian people know that Israel cares about your independence, your heritage, and your culture. We count ourselves as lucky to share a border with you, the most peaceful one, and to fight together against the threat of terror."

Peres also commended Jordan's King Abdullah II regarding the regional peace initiative including 57 Muslim states.
