Italy on Thursday called for a tough message against Iran's violent crackdown on protesters as it prepared to open a meeting of foreign ministers of the industrialized Group of Eight nations.
Rome had originally invited Iran to attend the three-day gathering in the northeastern city of Trieste as a special guest, arguing that Tehran could have an important role to play in stabilizing Afghanistan, a key focus of the meeting. (Reuters)
