Israeli musician's band up for 2009 Mercury Awards

Bass player Liran Donin's jazz group, Led Bib, shortlisted for Mercury's prestigious Album of the Year award, for May release of 'Sensible Shoes'

Israeli musician and bass player Liran Donin has be nominated, along with his band, Led Bib, for the 2009 Barclaycard Mercury Prize's Album of the Year award

The prestigious prize in awarded for the best album in the United Kingdom or Ireland. Led Bib is up for the prize for it latest release – "Sensible Shoes."

Led Bib's quintet includes bandleader Mark Holub (drums), Donin (electric and upright bass) Toby McLaren (Fender Rhodes and piano) and Chris Williams and Pete Grogan, both on the alto sax; who together create an experimental jazz-rock sound.

Originally from Hod Hasharon, Donin has been living in London for the past decade. Led Bib was formed in 2003 and Donin has since made a name for himself in the British music industry, recording for other artists as well.

"It's an amazing feeling," he told Ynet once the nomination was announced. "We're still trying to understand the power (the nomination) wields. Since it was announced, we've been getting dozens of calls from recording and distributing companies in Europe about possibly touring in the US.

"A jazz band has never won the award, but we have a good feeling. The prize has great artistic importance, but the winners also get £20,000, so there's a financial aspect to this achievement and that's amazing."

Led Bib's debut album was released in 2005, with the sophomore effort following in 2007. Both received favorable reviews and the group began performing in various UK jazz festivals, as well as winning several industry awards.

The Mercury Awards will be held in London on September 8.
