Israeli rescue team joins search for backpacker in India

24-year-old did not return to Kheer Ganga village in Parvati Valley after embarking on one-day trek; region considered dangerous to tourists

An Israeli search and rescue team was expected to leave for India Sunday to join the search for a 24-year-old Israeli backpacker who went missing in the Parvati Valley, located in India's northern region.

On Tuesday the missing Israeli and his friend embarked on a one-day trek from the village of Kheer Ganga. At some point they split up, and on Wednesday the friend notified Israeli authorities that the backpacker did not return to the village.

Local search and rescue teams in India launched a search for the missing Israeli.

The Parvati Valley area, which attracts many Israelis, is considered dangerous for tourists.

More than 10 years ago backpacker Nadav Mintzer was murdered there, and about four years ago 23-year-old Jerusalem resident Daniel Mountviten disappeared in the same area after leaving his room in the morning for a short walk. He was never found. Dror Sheck (23) was stabbed to death in the region two years ago.
