MKs demand parliamentary probe of soldier abuse

MKs Shai, Matalon say abuse of soldiers by commanders in IDF is rapidly growing phenomenon

A number of MKs are demanding that a parliamentary committee be assigned to probe a case in which soldiers belonging to the 74th Battalion of the Armored Corps were abused by their commanders. The case was first made public by Ynet.

MK Nachman Shai (Kadima) and MK Moshe Matalon (Yisrael Beiteinu) are also demanding that a number of other abuse cases be probed by the special committee.

"Evidence shows that this is a growing phenomenon in the IDF," Matalon told Ynet. "It is necessary to hold a civilian investigation, not just a military one, by assigning a parliamentary investigating committee. What is most disturbing is the silence of the abused soldiers. It raises many questions."

MK Shai said, "As time goes by the seriousness of the abuse and the depth of the phenomenon in the IDF become clearer. This is just the tip of the iceberg."

About two weeks ago Ynet learned that a number of Armored Corps soldiers were continuously abused by their commanders, a number of whom have been convicted and sentenced to jail time. Three commanders remain in custody.

On Thursday Military Court President Colonel Erez Port ordered the Military Police to expand its investigation to include higher ranking officers in the 74th Battalion, and its commander was interrogated.

In addition Brigadier-General Eyal Zamir, commander of the 36th Armored Division of which the 74th Battalion is part, has ordered that a permanent notation be placed in the service record of both the current battalion commander and the previous one, for their part in the abuse.
