'Apples from the Desert' to be staged in Philippines

Savyon Liebrecht's play to be performed in September by Philippines' national theater, both in English and in local language

Israeli play "Apples from the Desert", written by playwright Savyon Liebrecht and performed at the Beit Lessin Theater, is about to be staged in the Philippines.

The play will be performed at the Philippines' national theater, with the debut held on September 3, in the presence of Liebrecht and representatives of the Israeli Embassy in Manila.

The play will be preformed alternately in English and in the local language, Tagalog, by two different casts.

"Apples from the Desert" was first performed at Beit Lessin in September 2006, and has so far been staged almost 500 times. It won the Theater Award for best playwright of the year (Savyon Liebrecht), best supporting actress (Rivka Neumann), and the year's most promising actress (Gali Ben Giat). Its cast include Liora Rivlin, Tehiya Danon, Amos Lavi and Yonatan Paz-Buganim.

The play tells the story of Rivka, a religious adolescent, whose father is trying to find her a match. Rivka, however, falls in love with Dubi, a kibbutznik, and runs away with him to his southern kibbutz. Her mother, aunt and father refuse to accept her new way of life and head south for a conflict between two worldviews, which are essentially two extremes of the Israeli society.
