IDF deterrence "will ensure the calm in the northern sector," Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Wednesday.
During a visit to the GOC Northern Command to observe a joint land, air and naval forces' drill, Barak was briefed by Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi and Northern Command head Maj.-Gen. Gadi Eizenkot.
"The drill reflects the significant progress made since 2006 (Second Lebanon War) with regards to our readiness for a possible escalation on this front," said the defense minister.
IDF chief Ashkenazi said, 'The drill is part of our need to be prepared for challenges along the northern front. I am pleased with the progress in the ability of our forces, and we will continue to prepare as part of our duty to be ready for (war).
"I believe that this calm (in the north) is in the interest of both sides, but we must remain alert and prepared," he said.
