Israel signs visa agreements with Serbia, Montenegro

Countries' foreign ministers say deal will help boost economic and other ties

Israel has agreed with Serbia and Montenegro to abolish visas for citizens of one country visiting the other.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman signed the agreement with Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic in Belgrade on Wednesday and with his Montenegrin counterpart Milan Rocen in Podgorica on Thursday.

The ministers said the deals would help boost economic and other ties.

It was the first ever official trip to Serbia by an Israeli foreign minister. Lieberman has also traveled to Croatia as part of his Balkan tour.

Lieberman said Israel had a "history of friendly relations" with Serbia, adding that Serbs and Jews fought together against the Nazis.

He said the Jewish state was interested in investing in the Montenegrin tourism industry.

Tiny Montenegro lies on the Adriatic Sea. The Balkan republic of some 600,000 people split from much larger Serbia in 2006.
