During August 2009, the Israel Employment Service recorded 25,300 requests for workers, made by employers – a 9.5% increase from requests received during the month of July.

The Increase in employee demand also represented an improvement from last August, which marked the beginning of mass layoffs due to the economic crisis and recorded a similar number of requests, but only had 21 work days, as opposed to 22 days this year.

According to Yossi Farhi, director-general of the Employment Service, "The increased demand for employees is primarily due to the recovery of economic activity in the market, as well as intensive actions taken by the employment service.

"However, it is still too soon to draw conclusions and be euphoric. There are still 234,000 job seekers and we must handle them."

The Employment Service figures for the month of August, as well as for the previous months, suggest that the mass layoffs have come to an end, even tough hiring season has yet to begin.

Slight increase in job seekers

The number of unemployed decreased during August for the first time since May 2008, totaling 211,600. The number of layoffs also decreased sharply since the beginning of the year, from 19,700 in January, to 15,200 in August.

Most employees who fell victim to mass layoffs during the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009 were males working in the high-tech and industry fields.

During the month of January, 56% of total wokers laid off were males, compared with only 50% this August.

The total number of unemployed during August 2009, including lay offs, discharged soldiers and new mothers who have not found jobs, reached 22,000, a sharp decrease from 24,000 during the first months of 2009.

The number of job seekers totaled at 236,900 during August 2009, an increase of only 0.2% from July, but 19.6% higher than the total number of jobseekers last August.

The number of jobseekers in development and Arab towns was high compared with the relative number of residents in these towns, totaling at 93,000 and representing approximately 40% of total job seekers. Only 143,000 of all jobseekers reside in large cities or small Jewish towns.
