Benny Gantz assumes role as IDF deputy chief

Brigadier-General Gantz steps in as deputy chief of staff replacing Dan Harel, who retired after 35 years of service. Ashkenazi: IDF faces many internal, external challenges

Brigadier-General Benny Gantz assumed his role as deputy chief of staff Thursday in place of Brigadier-General Dan Harel, who is due to retire after 35 years in duty. The exchange ceremony was held at the IDF Kirya base in Tel Aviv.

IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Gabi Ashkenazi thanked Harel and said he has been the driving force behind many important procedures within the Israeli Defense Forces.

"He is resolved, opinionated and uncompromising and has carried out his role in an exceptional manner," Ashkenazi said. The IDF chief congratulated his new deputy and stated that the army is facing many challenges, both internal and external.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak congratulated Harel and said he has left a profound mark on the army. On his part, Brigadier-General Harel said that he has spent two fascinating years as deputy chief of staff.

"We have managed to create a trend of moving forward and pushing for operational achievements," Harel said. He also addressed the lessons drawn by the army from the Second Lebanon War saying, "I see the deep change the IDF has undergone in all areas - reserves and regular service, training, exercises and more.

"All these have led to organizational and cultural changes, a change of atmosphere and a sense of operational capability which is now characteristic of IDF as a whole."

Harel added that he is leaving with a sense of satisfaction. "I am certain you will succeed in leading the State of Israel through troubled waters into safe shores," he added.

Gantz said, "We shall keep addressing the important issues in a professional and comprehensive manner and will fulfill what is expected of us with cooperation and mutual support."
