Iranian officials: Our missiles are ready

Revolutionary Guards' Air Force chief tells Fars news agency Iranian Sajjil missiles capable of handling any attack or serious threat from enemy state. Meanwhile, Iran's aerial defense commander says, 'We'll produce dozens of new antiaircraft missile systems'

A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander warned on Sunday that the nation's Sajjil missiles can handle any attack or serious threat from the state's enemies.

General Hossein Salami, the Revolutionary Guard's Air Force chief, commented on the sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear program and its program for the development of surface-to-surface missiles, saying, "Despite the United State's economic, military, and defensive strength – it is experiencing a loss, but Iran continues to thrive despite the sanctions and its capabilities and strength grow by the day."

General Salami, quoted by the Iranian news agency Fars, made these comments some two weeks after Iran carried out a drill in which various types of missiles were test fired.

The Sajjil has a range of 2,000 km (1,242 miles), and is a two-stage, solid-fueled missile, which can allow for faster alignment compared to the liquid-fueled Shahab-3 missile.

The Revolutionary Guards' Air Force is responsible for Iran's surface-to-surface missiles. The Revolutionary Guard's army is separate from the Iran's military, and was set up in 1979 during the Islamic revolution, with its followers considered extremely faithful to the regime's ideology.

Meanwhile, head of the Iranian Air Force General Ahmad Mikani said his county's defense system is highly advanced and added that Iran plans to produce dozens of new antiaircraft systems.

The general said Iran is capable of locating and elimination cruise missiles using its advanced radar systems. "We are now at the height of our defensive capabilities," Mikani was quoted by Fars as saying.

The remarks made by Iranian officials are likely meant to serve as a signal to the United States and Israel - who are preparing for a broad military exercise this week –to indicate that Iran will be prepared for any kind of action necessary to defend its sovereignty and nuclear facilities.
