Meir Shalev to lead New York event
One of Israel’s leading authors to headline 14th Annual Author’s Café of the Central Queens in Forest Hills
One of Israel’s most celebrated authors, Meir Shalev, will be the featured speaker on Sunday, November 15, at 2 pm, at the 14th Annual Author’s Café of the Central Queens YM & YWHA in Forest Hills.
A critically acclaimed, internationally best selling author, Meir Shalev’s first book, "The Blue Mountain", was one of five all-time top Israeli best sellers. He will speak about his latest book, "A Pigeon and a Boy", which won last year’s National Jewish Book Award.
Shalev’s work has been translated into twenty languages and he recently won the Brenner Prize, Israel’s top literary award, in addition to other international literary awards.
One of Israel’s most popular authors, Shalev is also a commentator with Israeli leading daily Yedioth Ahronoth and has written several books of nonfiction.
His latest novel, a book club favorite in the United States, weaves together two love stories separated by half a century. During the 1948 War of Independence – a time when pigeons are still used to deliver battlefield messages – a mortally wounded pigeon handler dispatches one last pigeon to the young woman he has loved since childhood. A contemporary story weaves in and out of the earlier story, with both tales focused on how we find a sense of home.
The Author’s Café is a benefit for the Hevesi Jewish Heritage Library of the Central Queens YM & YWHA. Tickets to the event, which includes a kosher dessert reception and live music, are $18 in advance, $21 at the door.
