'Starving mother' to judge: My angels shouldn't suffer

Jerusalem woman accused of starving son addresses Supreme Court Justice Danziger after hearing. 'All said about me an utter lie. The damage the State wants to inflict on my kids is irreversible,' she says

At the end of a hearing held Friday at the Supreme Court regarding the State Prosecutor's Office appeal against the Jerusalem District Court's decision not to separate the mother accused of starving her son from her children, the woman began a monologue addressed to Justice Yoram Danziger.

"All that has been said about me is a complete lie. These little angels shouldn't suffer as they do," she said.

The court is scheduled to make a ruling on the matter in the coming days after the mother also appealed the decision to remove her from the Mea Shearim neighborhood in Jerusalem.

"I wish to talk about something that any mother with children knows about. My children are currently undergoing such agony that no other children go through," she told the court.

"Even during the time I was looking after my son H. I would return to the kids every night and every morning. Throughout their entire lives my children received my full attention. During this affair they had nightmares and I wouldn't let them go through that. I would bring them to the hospital on occasion, especially when I was taking care of my little boy."

The accused mother said her children asked her, "Why does mommy need to be in jail? they didn’t understand it. After I was released from prison my kids were extremely excited to see me. They started crying bitterly. My house became a public site, but my children wanted their mommy and daddy, a private home.

"Why should my husband have to be with them at noon when I'm sitting through debates? They want me. My four-and-half-year-old girl was questioned for two hours, it is unbelievable. They don’t sleep at night. The damage the State wants to inflict upon my children is irreversible. My seven-year-old says he can't take it anymore. Why put the children through this, what have they done? "

'Difficult and sensitive situation'

At this point Justice Daziger addressed the mother and said, "You see things differently. Anyone in the courtroom is concerned about the children's welfare. Only there are different approaches. It is natural that you feel the kids need to be with you in their home but the State is doing its job and therefore it is a most difficult and sensitive situation.

"This affair has been occupying the courts for months. I can only tell you that I hope madam, as well as her husband and family members, will try to gather what ever strength is left no matter was the decision will be."

During the hearing, the State's representatives - Attorneys Maayan Rimon-Oren and Yael Sharf - reiterated the claim that the mother poses a danger to her children and that they should be separated. On the other side, the mother's attorneys, David Halevy and Reuven Barkai claimed that their client isn't dangerous and that her conditions should be relieved and that she be released from house arrest.
