This season, a 50% export increase is expected, amounting to 50,000 tons of avocados exported, out of which 70% will be exported by Agrexco. Expected revenues will reach some €70,000 million
. Israel is the only producer of "green" avocados – a special variety of avocados which are environmentally friendly. Three quarters of all avocado farmers in Israel are members of the avocado farmers' union, which shares a strategic partnership with Agrexco.
Agrexco outlines the methods of avocado farming and care, making sure the disinfestations process is purely biological and does not include the spraying of the herbarium.
Agrexco Managing Director Shlomo Tirosh said that 90% of global avocado trade was of the Haas species, which has a black peel. Tirosh added that Israel was also the world leader in avocados from the green variety, which stay green also after they ripen.
"We export seven or eight different varieties of green avocados, compared with other countries that have only one or two varieties. Adding to that, our avocado is pesticide free, and therefore is green on all accounts," says Tirosh.
A new campaign launching next week will focus on the added value of the avocado, while using data from the United Stated Department of Health, which recommends adding avocado to the daily diet.
