Seven soldiers stationed at the Nitzanim Military Base were impeached and sent to jail for throwing wild parties on military premises, Ynet learned Monday.

All seven are company sergeants-majors in Nitzanim, which is a basic training depot in southern Israel.

Several of them were found drunk by senior base officers in at least two cases, but the latter decided not to report them. The matter was brought to the attention of base commander only last week.

The IDF has bee battling alcohol abuse on military premises for a long time and anyone caught drunk while in uniform is punished severely.

Colonel Yossi Sakal, head of the Magal reinforcement unit, was tasked with investigating the incident.

Initial details suggest that the seven's troubles began when they were caught barbequing in the base, thus violating fire codes.

The incident was seen as grave by itself, since all seven were company commanders, meant to set an example to young recruits.

Subsequent disciplinary action resulted in detention for all seven.

'Incident cannot go unpunished'

The seven apparently decided to make the most out of their weekends while in detention and threw several parties, smuggling alcohol into the base.

Pictures taken of the drunken soldiers after the third party came to attention of an officer in the base, who reported the incident to the base commander.

Sakal sentenced all seven to 28 days in prison and relieved them of their duties. "You simply cannot let such an incident go unpunished," a military source told Ynet.

"This are company commanders who repeatedly broke protocol, making them unworthy of their post."

The officers who failed to reports the first incident were reprimanded, he added.

An IDF Spokesman's Unit statement said that "this was a grave incident in which several soldiers disobeyed orders and failed to adhere to the behavioral norms expected of them.

"A Magal commander's review found that they should be sentenced to jail. The results of the investigation have been distributed to all base commanders in order to avoid any reoccurrences."
