Police: Ushrenko killer apologized to daughter before murder

Additional details on Kerlik family's involvement in shocking Rishon Lezion massacre revealed during court remand hearing

Before allegedly murdering the six Ushrenko family members, Damian Kerlik met with his daughter and apologized to her, Chief Inspector Ezra Goldstein said Thursday as the Ramla Magistrate's Court discussed the police's request to extend the remand of the suspect's father, Oleg, and another relative.

According to the police, Kerlik spoke to his daughter when he had already known that he was planning to massacre the family and told her, "I love you, I'm sorry for everything. Tell mother that I love her."

The police representative explained why Kerlik's relative is suspected of aiding him in robbing and murdering the family. "In early August, at the Premier club, she received from Natalia Kerlik (the suspect's wife) a white envelope containing the key to the Ushrenko home and gave it to Damian Kerlik."

Chief Inspector Goldstein told the court that the Kerlik family tried to help Damian escape after the murder. "An operations room was set up in the family home, and every move on the street would be reported to Natalia and Damian. They were given information and advice on how to escape, while brainstorming on how to carry this out."

The defense counsels, Attorneys Dan Bauman and Galit Bash of the Public Defender's Office, said that the two should be released as the police investigation on their matter has been completed and they have no ability to disrupt it. The police representatives, on the other hand, claimed that the two were arrested for disrupting investigation procedures and for fear that they would escape abroad.

The court eventually decided to extend the remand of Oleg Kerlik and the other relative until Monday.
