Gazan gets 3 life terms for tank attack

Three IDF soldiers were killed after their tank was blown up in Gaza Strip in 2002

The Beersheba District Court sentenced 41-year-old Nihad Aqra, who in 2002 planted an explosive device that killed three IDF soldiers, to three consecutive life terms.

On the day of the tank attack, Aqra and other group members arrived at the site of the bombing and planted the explosives. They then waited for the arrival of Israeli vehicles and detonated the first explosive. Exchanged of fire ensued and an IDF tank called to the area drove over the second explosive device.

Aqra was also convicted of assisting in the planting of two other bombs, one of them weighing roughly 220 pounds.

The Gaza man was detained in August 2007 by Shin Bet and police forces, and confessed to his involvement in a series of other attacks. A resident of Sheikh Raduan, Aqra was a member of the Popular Resistance Committees in the Gaza Strip and joined the group in 2001, while he was still working for the Palestinian General Intelligence Service.

Aqra, whose leg was severed during clashes between Hamas and Fatah, admitted to taking his orders from two senior PRC members who were killed by security forces in 2006.
