MKs fight 'stain' on Eastern European community

MKs meet to discuss new stereotyping of immigrants following Ushrenko murder

MKs representing Eastern European communities in Israel gathered for a special meeting Tuesday in order to discuss a new type of stereotype said to be growing in Israel following the ghastly murder of six members of the Ushrenko family.

Many said the murder, which was committed by an Eastern European immigrant, should prompt the government to examine the past of its olim and not just award them citizenship based on their Jewish status and the Law of Return.

"We will not allow a whole community to be stained, and we will wage war with all who do so," said MK Zeev Elkin (Likud) at the meeting.

"We are here to say 'enough'," said MK Robert Tibayev (Kadima), who called the meeting. "A tsunami of violence is sweeping this country and it is not a matter of race at all. The Law of Return must not be altered."
