Committee fails to recommend AG candidate

PM, justice minister informed that committee members have failed to agree on candidate for post of attorney general

The committee tasked with identifying candidates for the post of attorney general informed the prime minister and justice minister that it failed to agree on a candidate.

By doing so, the committee is in fact handing back the mandate given to it by the government.

"The committee informed the prime minister and justice minister that it was unable to, despite the many attempts undertaken, present the government with even one candidate endorsed by at least four committee members," a special statement issued by the committee Thursday said.

According to the statement, four of the candidates enjoyed the support of three committee members. However, a candidate needs to be endorsed by at least four out of five committee members in order to be recommended for the senior post.

"The committee expresses its regret over the end result," Thursday's statement concluded.

Committee members convened many times in recent weeks but failed to come up with an agreed-upon candidate, with several candidates being vetoed by some members.

The disagreements spilled over to the debate regarding Thursday's special statement, after one committee member objected to the letter sent to the prime minister. However, he was overruled by the four remaining members.
