Five loaded guns and a Carl Gustav rifle were found in Moshav Herut in the Sharon region Wednesday, in what is thought to be a weapons cache from the British Mandate era.

A Border Guard volunteer residing in the moshav spotted a rusty iron box in an avocado plantation while touring the community's rural grounds. Having opened the box he discovered a rifle and five guns. He decided to take them home, deeming them safe, and then proceeded to stored them in his warehouse.

Police became involved when the volunteer's daughter discovered the weapons and reported her findings. The volunteer told officers, who cleared the weapons, that he intended to hand them over to the local base.

Kfar Saba police officers realized the guns were charged after examining the weapons.

It is estimated that the cache, which was buried in the ground, was exposed following the heavy rains in recent weeks.

The Sharon District Police stressed the importance of reporting any discovery of arms in order to turn them over to sappers and noted that weapons should not be touched under any circumstances .
