Haredim protest at Jerusalem Intel plant

A few dozen ultra-Orthodox spontaneously rally against plant's operation on Shabbat. Haredi community's leadership plan more protests on weekdays

Around 40 haredim arrived at the Intel plant in Jerusalem Friday night in order to protest its operation on Shabbat, and emitted cries of "Shabbes". Police rushed to the scene, but no violent incidents were reported.

The rally, which was apparently spontaneous, was held by residents of ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods located near the plant in Har Hotzvim.

For the first time since the protests began, leaders of the capital's haredi community did not distribute flyers calling on its supporters to protest outside the Intel plant on Shabbat. Instead, the haredi leaders are planning to hold a rally during a weekday, sometime next week.

The protests outside the Intel plant began two weeks ago. During last week's rally, which was attended by hundreds of haredim, a number of protestors attacked the driver and passengers of a vehicle traveling on a road near the plant. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The protestors yelled "Shabbes" near the plant's gates. Eyewitnesses said security guards kept them from entering Intel's grounds while police unsuccessfully attempted to disband the group.

Officers on horseback were subsequently alerted to the scene, and police closed off all roads leading to the area.
