Kadima MKs criticize Mofaz's peace plan
'Former PM Sharon rejected a similar plan presented by Peres and called it a disaster,' MK Bar-On tells faction meeting. MK Itzik: It's similar to Oslo Accords
Kadima on Monday discussed party member Shaul Mofaz's comprehensive peace plan, three weeks after the Knesset member presented it to the press.
During the faction meeting senior party members criticized Mofaz's plan, which calls for the establishment of a Palestinian state within temporary borders and conducting negotiations with Hamas in case the Islamist group, which rules Gaza, is elected by the Palestinian people.
"This plan is reminiscent of the Oslo Accords," said MK Dalia Itzik, while former minster Ronnie Bar-On, a staunch supporter of Kadima chairwoman and Mofaz rival Tzipi Livni, said, "This really is Oslo. (Former Prime Minister Ariel) Sharon rejected this plan when it was presented to him by (Shimon) Peres, and called it a disaster."
Former internal security minister MK Avi Dichter, who also headed the Shin Bet security service, said any peace plan that assumes the Palestinian Authority is homogenous is doomed to fail. "The Hamas issue cannot be ignored," he said.
As for the cabinet's decision to temporarily halt construction in the West Bank, Kadima MKs said they would abstain from voting on a no-confidence motion in the Knesset on the matter, apart from MK Gideon Ezra, who said he would support the government.
