Driver fleeing police leaves son on sidewalk

Police officers notice Jerusalem man driving two-year-old son on motor scooter between driver's seat and steering shaft without helmet. Man instructed to stop, but instead leaves kid on sidewalk and keeps driving

This is not how you should take your kid to kindergarten. A motor scooter driver from Jerusalem was detained for investigation on Monday after he fled police officers who asked him to pull over for placing his toddler son between the driver's seat and the steering shaft. Making matters worse, the toddler was not wearing a helmet.

Around 10:30 am, traffic police officers in Jerusalem noticed a man driving a motor scooter in the Givat Shaul neighborhood. His son, 2, was sitting between the driver's seat and the steering shaft.

The police ordered the driver to pull over, but the driver refused. At a certain point, the driver stopped, placed the child on the sidewalk, and fled the scene.

The police subsequently were able to locate the child's mother, who initially refused to cooperate with the officers. However, after some time, she gave them her husband's cell phone number.

The man was summoned for investigation. He was questioned for suspicions of abandoning a minor, unsafe driving, and failure to obey a police officer. During his investigation, the father claimed that he fled the scene because he did not want to be slapped with a traffic violation.

The toddler was unhurt in the incident.

At the end of the investigation, the father was released on bail. The police will recommend that he stand trial.
