Government earmarks $50 mil for Gaza vicinity

Netanyahu, finance minister create plan to promote development of Qassam-ravaged communities

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz will present an aid package to the government on Sunday for approval, which earmarks a total of NIS 190 million ($50 million) for Sderot and the Gaza vicinity.

According to the plan, which was put together by the director-general of the Prime Minister's Office, Eyal Gabai, and Finance Ministry Budget Director Udi Nissan, an additional NIS 150 million ($39 million) will be used for protecting educational institutions in the area.

Infrastructure is also included in the plan, with about $10 million allotted to the rebuilding and expansion of sewer systems.

Gaza vicinity residents will also go on enjoying a reduction in property tax, rated at 35% for the private sector and 25% for businesses. The government plan as a whole is aimed at redirecting its investment in the region from specific budgets to general infrastructure and development.

In a bid to attract more residents to the area, the government will also offer a tax reduction of 20% for 2010. In addition, around $500,000 will be allotted to the Sderot industrial area.

In the field of security, emergency medical services and psycho-social services will remain similar to those provided in 2009, and new fortified structures will be erected throughout the area.

"The decision expresses our commitment to the safety of the citizens of the Gaza vicinity as well as the normalcy of their lives, through economic and educational growth" Netanyahu said.

"The concern for the safety and wellbeing of our brothers, citizens of Israel, whose communities were used as targets for thousands of missiles launched by terror organizations supported by Iran, will continue to head our list of priorities."
