Settler youth clash with freeze inspectors

Some 50 Hashmonaim residents block entrance of Civil Administration inspectors, security forces trying to enforce freeze orders in settlement

As settler heads protest in Jerusalem, some 50 youths from the West Bank settlement of Hashmonaim on Wednesday prevented Civil Administration inspectors and security forces from entering the community to enforce construction freeze orders.

The youths slung mud at the inspectors, and clashes ensued at the scene.

Recent days have seen a relative easement in tensions between settlers and security forces regarding the construction freeze.

But last Thursday, a confrontation between a truck driver and a settler in Beitar Illit was noted. The settler claims the driver assaulted him.

According to the settler, the driver, who arrived in the settlement with a team of inspectors to remove a bulldozer from a construction site, struck him and broke his glasses.

Police and the Civil Administration have vowed to probe the matter.

The Civil Administration said in response that it is aware of the complaint and plans to investigate it alongside the police investigation.
